What’s The Story? Docu Film Club next screening will be ‘Out in the Silence’

We are delighted to announce the next film we are showing as part of WHAT’S THE STORY? our documentary film club will be Out in the Silence an inspirational documentary that illustrates the challenge of being an outsider in a conservative rural community. Out in the Silence captures the remarkable chain of events that unfold when the announcement of filmmaker Joe Wilson’s wedding to another man ignites a firestorm of controversy in his small Pennsylvania hometown.

Drawn back by a plea for help from the mother of a gay teen being tormented at school, Wilson’s journey dramatically illustrates the universal challenges of being an outsider in a conservative environment and the transformation that is possible when those who have long been constrained by a traditional code of silence summon the courage to break it.

Hello Moon

Representatives from US Embassy visit Outhouse.

Representatives from the US Embassy in Dublin presented Outhouse with a copy of President Obama’s autobiography “Dreams from my father” for our library last week when they visited the Centre and had a first-hand look at what we do.  In recognition that being Irish includes being LGBT, and in line with high level statements from the State Department and White House, we were both delighted and honoured to welcome Karyn Posner-Mullen, Director, Office of Public Affairs US Embassy to Outhouse. High level recognition of grassroots work both strengthens our resolve and encourages us to step up our efforts. We also hope that such association may help potential supporters and funders recognise what we are doing.

Off and Running the film at Outhouse

We are delighted that Off and Running will be the first film shown at Outhouse documentary film night WHAT’S THE STORY? on Thursday the 1st of March at 7:30 pm. This film was chosen by documentary film maker Anna Rodgers, we are really looking forward to it.

Off and Running tells the story of Brooklyn teenager Avery, a track star with a bright future. She is the adopted African-American child of white Jewish lesbians. Her older brother is black and Puerto Rican and her younger brother is Korean. Though it may not look typical, Avery’s household is like most American homes — until Avery writes to her birth mother and the response throws her into crisis. She struggles over her “true” identity, the circumstances of her adoption and her estrangement from black culture. Just when it seems as if her life is unraveling, Avery decides to pick up the pieces and make sense of her identity, with inspiring results.

Permission for screening kindly provided by the director Nicole Opper.

“Fascinating… Opper allows Avery’s story to unfold with the sort of naturalistic drama usually associated with scripted features… a startlingly sharp portrait.”

– Indiewire

“One of the most poignant films in this year’s festival… a unique and very American coming-of-age story that delves into the psyche of race through a fresh and careful dissection of a family’s struggle.”

– Tribeca Film Festival
